Poor Zoie. We took her for allergy testing a couple of weeks ago. She had NO clue as to what was coming, and neither did I, really.
We walked into the exam room, and they asked us to take off her shirt. She was NOT comfortable with this. She wanted it back on, NOW. They started with the foods. The nurse made her face away and they pricked her poor little back with about 20 or so sticks. After waiting 20 minutes for the results, fortunately for us the foods were all negative. No food allergies! This was very surprising to me since she could only drink soy milk for the longest time. I just knew she was allergic to milk, but the doctor said she probably outgrew it.
They went on to the next set--animals. After about 8 more sticks, we found that she was allergic to dogs, cats, feathers and apox (the stuffing in stuffed animals). This was not good since we have a dog at my mom's house that she is around ALL the time. And the doctor told me I had to get rid of my down comforter. Boo...
So after the 20 minute wait after those, it was on to household allergens. Allergic. After that, it was grasses and trees. Allergic. So basically, she was allergic to everything but foods. :(
After over 50 pricks, nickle & quarter sized whelps on her arms, and a lot of tears, we could leave. However, we would have to return weekly for allergy shots. Chuck E. Cheese's did help a little that night, though.
The next couple of days were hard on her. She was basically injected with the poisons that she was allergic to, and it was in her system. She rain fevers and did NOT feel good. Good thing we did it on a Thursday. She was able to spend Friday with my mom, who I am sure babied her... as usual. :)
She has been 3 times now for allergy shots. And every time, she cries. They switch arms each time, but she still fights it. She now knows when we get on the turnpike and asks, "Mom--WHERE are we going?" I try to avoid telling her until we get in the parking lot, although she is bright and already has it figured out.
Hopefully she will get used to the weekly shots. They said she could have to get them for the rest of her life, or it could be just a couple of years. They want to re-test her in 6 months, so we will see if she is getting better.
